“Political Liberalism” is one of the chief contributions of Enlightenment thought to the modern world. One of the central tenets of political liberalism is that the purposes of the state can be justified apart from religious considerations. In the late eighteenth century, both the French and American revolutions created new political orders that radically altered the way the West understands politics. Note the authors we read in our study of the Enlightenment: Thomas Hobbes(Leviathan), John Locke(Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Second Treatise on Government), James Madison (Federalist No. 10), Thomas Paine(The Age of Reason), Edmund Burke(Reflections on the Revolution in France) and Mary Wollstonecraft(A Vindication of the Rights of Woman)(these can all be found in the core text reader). Each of these thinkers contributed in some important way to the idea of political liberalism. Using these authors (you can be selective) please write a 4-5 page paper addressing how the Enlightenment changed our understanding of human nature and political order.
