To: Zo Watts, Personnel Manager From” William Butterworth, Health and Safety Manager Date: November 12, 2013 Subject: Application of Ergonomic Principles to Computer Workstations It is recommended that a copy of the attached booklet entitled Guide for Computer Workstation Ergonomics be sent to all senior managers and purchasing agents who may influence the purchase and installation of computer equipment in Bigco over the ensuing years, together with a covering letter from some appropriate upper‐level authority in Bigco urging them to pay attention to the selection, purchase, and installation of this type of equipment in the future. Your suggestions as to the most appropriate procedure and list of recipients would be appreciated. Step on it! In the course of implementing the Health Services program for monitoring the visual and other health‐related complains of personnel working at computer stations in Bigco, numerous examples of gross violation of ergonomic principles have been horribly, terribly evident. Obviously there cannot be an overnight to these problems as was openly acknowledged by speakers at the National Safety Society conference in Toronto last month. Improvement and conversion of this equipment will cost tens of thousands of dollars at Bigco. And it should be noted that Bigco is by no means unique. Workstation ergonomic problems exist industry wide! But, by the same token, the need for future change is becoming widely recognized and it is important that our fine company keep pace with equipment changes. Much could be done in the interim to improve the currently established workstations and lessen the legitimate health‐related complaints of employees, which show a common‐sense causal relationship to poor posture, poor lighting arrangements, and on and on and on. It is important that awareness be developed on the part of all those managers, supervisors, and agents who ultimately influence the selection, purchasing, and installation of computer equipment. Any suggestions as to how much awareness could be best cultivated will be appreciated. Have a nice day! Adapted from Business Communication Essentials, 3rd Canadian edition, Bovee et al., p. 87.
