Cancer is the name of a group of related diseases that involve a mutating growth of cells in the body that invade surrounding tissue. Inflammation has long been associated with the development of cancer. Over time, chronic inflammation can lead to DNA damage of cells which can turn into cancer, therefore, people with chronic inflammatory diseases tend to have an increased risk of cancer. For instance, people with Crohn’s disease may have an increased risk of colon cancer (National Cancer Institute, 2015). Reference: National Cancer Institute. (2015). Chronic inflammation.
