Ever since Thomas Jefferson wrote the memorable phrase, “All men are created equal”, America has endorsed the ideal of providing equality of opportunity for its population. Such equality of opportunity is supposed to make it possible for all Americans to live in safe and decent homes and neighborhoods, have enough food and other necessities, be assured of economic security in their old age, and the ability to educate their children to adulthood, and thus achieve “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Equality of result, that is, the guarantee that all Americans actually receive these benefits, has been more elusive, and there is much debate about whether US society has lived up to the ideals noted above. Write an essay on how Americans have understood equality of opportunity (civil rights) in the period from 1945 to the present and how equality of opportunity expanded or contracted over the period. Discuss both the major legislative efforts at the national level to provide equality of opportunity and localized grassroots-level agitation for civil rights, and assess their results. Have any particular approaches been especially beneficial or detrimental to the drive for equality? Provide specific reasons and examples for your answer. (minimum of 800 words) *Be sure to only use the resources stipulated – NO using outside resources* Question 2: Evaluate the effects of the Vietnam War on the worldview of Americans – those in control, those who did the fighting, and those who supported and protested at home. Did the Vietnam War influence America and American thinking in ensuing decades? Why or why not? Be sure to discuss especially foreign policy endeavors, domestic politics, and social activism. Provide specific reasons and examples for your answer. *you may use documentaries, textbook.
