Chariot warfare was important across Afro-Eurasia for many centuries. Our textbook (WTWA: 103) asserts that “chariots…never achieved the military importance in China that they did elsewhere in Afro-Eurasia.” Yet, the earliest Chinese narrative history, the Zuozhuan or Zuo Tradition, which covers events of the “Spring and Autumn period” (722-468 BC), contains many references to chariot warfare. Using evidence from the Zuozhuan selections, analyze the construction of chariots, their crews, their use in battle (including the effects of terrain), the organization of chariot-based armies (think about the infantry parts of the army too), and the ritual uses of chariots.
