Write a fully developed essay (2-3 pages) on one of the following topics.  You may use outside sources; but if you do, you must cite and document properly according to MLA Style.

1)  Is it justifiable to consider sermons, political documents, or essays such as “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” The                  Declaration of Independence, The Crisis, or the Cherokee Memorials as literature?  Discuss.

2)  Mythology (and, thus, mythological heroes) can be secular, as well as religious.  In what ways does James Fenimore Cooper’s      Natty Bumppo help to develop the “myth of America”?  Discuss.

3)  Edgar Allan Poe does not fit easily into the line of American Romanticism descending from and associated with Ralph Waldo        Emerson.  In what ways would you characterize Poe as a Romantic?  Discuss.
