Purpose & Description Final exams are traditionally designed to test the knowledge you have acquired throughout a particular course of instruction. We have met a variety of types of individuals from a variety of walks of life while reading the material in this course. For this assignment, choose TWO readings from this semester and show how the subject matter is still relevant today. These can be poems, essays, stories, historical documents, etc. You can choose whatever you want. You can choose to analyze works from one or two authors, whichever you are most comfortable with and in which you can make a strong argument. Synthesize these two written texts to make an argument about the American experience, evaluating them in context with contemporary society . Quote from the text as you explain how the theme/concerns/issues of the work still apply in the early twenty-first century. You can use news websites to gain an understanding of current-day events in the United States of America and/or the world. Be sure and cite them. Instructions Once you have chosen your two readings and analyzed them, you will write a 2-3 page essay presenting your argument. Here are some general instructions to help you write this essay: –Analyze, DON’T Summarize. Don’t fill up pages by just telling me what the story or poem is about. Quote and paraphrase only as it adds to your argument. Don’t try to say a little about everything as this weakens your argument and makes it seem like you’re rambling. Instead, focus on proving how the text is relevant today and choose quotes from the text that you can discuss in depth to strengthen your claim. –Proofread and revise your essay for grammatical errors, sentence fragments, runon sentences, and unclear sentences. Re-read your sentences to make sure that you have clearly stated your argument and that you have included enough evidence (quoting/paraphrasing) and explanation to back up that claim. Make sure you have provided smooth transitions from paragraph to paragraph. Including topic sentences will help ensure this smooth transaction. Additionally, they will keep your work from straying off-topic. –Include a title for your paper. –Whenever you quote or paraphrase, ALWAYS include an in-text citation.
