1 – Critical Questions
Brown Girl, Brownstones by Paule Marshall, Books 1- 2 (pgs. 1-51)
Critical Questions Guidelines:
- A question that directly addresses the assigned reading.
- A question that can not be answered with a Yes/No.
- A question that will serve as a conversation starter and/or lead to a robust debate.
- A question you have thought about in depth about and/or have an opinion on/answer to.
- The question should be two to three sentences long.
2 – Free Write Assignment:
- Read Book 3, Chapters 1-4
- Pick one secondary character, i.e. anyone but Selina, from Book 3, Chapters 1-4
- Give yourself 20-30 minutes to write 2-3 paragraphs about your chosen secondary character
- This is a free write, so there aren’t a lot of constraints to this exercise. You can reflect on how you think the character fleshes out Selina’s narrative, or how a character reminds you of someone in your life, or how a character epitomizes or questions ideals about womanhood, Blackness, gender, etc., or how a character angers you or interests you, etc.
3 – Critical Questions
You will submit two critical questions from Brown Girl, Brownstones by Paule Marshall, Book 3, Chapters 5-9
