Lea, had a happy family life with her husband and two children and she has always thrived to maintain this. Unfortunately, few months ago, she started experiencing depressive thoughts after few minor arguments with her husband, John. Concerned about his wife’s mental health, John has brought Lea into counselling who in turn expresses her worries about not knowing the cause of her depressive thoughts. After the first session, John informs you that Lea has had an abusive childhood and she never talks about that period of her life. Based on the above case study and by elaborating on Freud’s concept of defence mechanism, explain how this concept can be used to better understand Lea’s situation.
