Demonstrate your understanding of the key terms in your text and relate your own examples to concepts from the course. These writing assignments should analyze your own experience in light of the scholarly material you are learning.  Gaining competence in ICC includes recognizing elements of culture in our everyday lives and thinking about personal and global topics from an intercultural perspective.  Choose ONE prompt option for your assignment.  Be sure to answer all parts of that prompt. Include clear examples, self reflection, and apply course concepts and terms accurately and descriptively in your writing.  Your paper should be 250-450 words. Include word count and make sure you clearly label your post with the Prompt number you chose or it will not be graded. Choose one of the following prompts… Prompt 1: How do our perceptions of our cultural identities influence our communication with others? What do we mean when we say that our identities are negotiated through communication? How does popular culture create or influence certain identities?   Prompt 2: Describe avowal and ascription in the process of identity formation? How do you feel when someone does not recognize the identity that is the most important to you?  What are some of the ways in which we express our identities? What are some ways we can affirm the avowed identities of others? Prompt 3:  What labels do you use to describe yourself? What experiences or people have influenced your identity development process? Can you think of a time when you resisted a negative identity that was assigned to you? What did you do or say? Were you successful? What role does power play in identity labels of cultural groups? Prompt 4: In the online lessons this week, PBS’s A Class Divided discussed the concepts of identity, prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination. What parallels can you make between Jane Elliott’s “Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes experiment” and the types of discrimination/stereotyping/prejudice that happens in real life? What do you think of Jane Elliott’s method of teaching about prejudice in the context of intercultural competence? Would you have done the same? Why/ why not? What are your other thoughts on the PBS video that we watched in this module?
