For the formal writing component of this class, each student is expected to produce a 1,500-word research paper. Students will choose a topic or theme related to the course content, and create a research question, with the professor’s approval, in which there could be multiple answers and perspectives (e.g. On balance, and with consideration for international business, economics, and politics, has globalization had more of a positive or negative impact on society?). From this research questions, students will develop a clear, single-sentence thesis statement that communicates the paper’s topic, focus, and supporting points. Both first and final drafts must include an attention-grabbing introduction, thesis statement (at the end of the introduction), at least 3 body paragraphs (although, 6 body paragraphs with a point-counterpoint format are preferred), a thoughtprovoking conclusion (i.e. a critical summary including your own informed opinion and/or suggestions for “next steps”), and at least 12 sources and in-paper citations (see Grading Rubric for Final Paper below for more details) As discussed in class, APA format is to be followed in writing this paper, and APA style is to be used for citing all sources. Sources are to be properly cited throughout the body of the paper, and a list of references is to be attached at the end of the paper.
