Students should think about a childcare center they are very familiar with: Summarize (one paragraph) rules needed to protect children from danger. Remember that rules should be designed to protect children from serious hazards and that the number of rules should be limited. This is because it is important to give children opportunities to handle reasonable risks on their own. Then create and submit three lists: Identify items that should be on a daily checklist of possible hazards teachers should be accountable for monitoring. Identify items that should be on a weekly checklist of possible hazards teachers should be accountable for monitoring. Identify areas the director should be responsible for monitoring and steps directors should take to ensure a safe environment for children and adults. There should be at least a dozen items on each list. You must be specific. Don’t just put “check outside for hazards”. List exactly what you are checking for: poisonous spiders, snakes, broken glass, cigarette butts, etc.
