What is Culture? “The complex whole which includes beliefs, art, knowledge, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [man] as a member of society” (Tylor, 1871). “The set of learned behaviors, beliefs, attitudes, values, and ideals that are characteristic of a particular society or population” (Ritter & Graham, 2017). “An inherited lens through which the individual perceives and understands the world that [he] inhabits and learns to live within” (Helman, 2000). “Within a group, what everybody knows that everybody else knows” (Sleeter & Grant, 1988). This Paper invites you to examine your culture and its effect on the health and well-being of yourself, family and community. You will identify and describe your culture, including origins, history, and people, while exploring the beliefs and practices of your culture, and their effect on health (specifically as it relates to your community). You should use a minimum of 5 cited sources, along with your personal, professional, and/or academic experience to respond to the assignment requirements. Culture that I identify with is Jamician-American Part 1 (6-pages) Title Page: Identify and describe your cultural identity: You may choose to explore one culture that you identify with, or multiple – if choosing multiple cultures be sure you can adequately describe both within the limited time. Your description should include: Cultural Identity: Describe your culture, including nativity, race/ethnicity, language(s), gender and generational status, spirituality, social systems, occupations, and other elements that are key to understanding your cultural identity. Origin: Your culture may come from a region of the world (spatial), a place in time (temporal), a spiritual or belief orientation, or a profession. As you can see by the definitions at the top of the assignment sheet, culture is defined in many ways. Part of understanding the culture is knowing where and/or when it comes from. Customs and traditions:Identify and describe important customs, traditions, attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, nutrition, and practices of your culture, and how they influence the health and well-being of members of the cultural group, specifically the community as a whole. What are some of the traditional health beliefs held by you and/or your family, and how do they affect your health? How are any of these attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors different than the other cultures around you, and how does that affect your ability to maintain health and access quality health care services/resources?(These may be around the seasons, spirituality or religion, familial interactions, politics, or something else you have found important from your research, or your experience). You should provide data that supports your assertions. History: Identify and describe key historical and current moments and movements for your culture, including those associated with social justice and human rights. This should include experience with other cultural groups and places, and the outcome of those experiences on your culture and its members. Include laws that were implemented that forced people to migrate to certain areas (i.e. zoning laws, colonization of land, forced to “ghettos”) Describe how this has impacted the health of the community today Reference Page: APA formatted: Minimum of 3 citations Part 2( 6-pages) Health Disparity: Identify a specific health issue that disproportionality impacts the culture you identify with/community (e.g. HIV, cancer, chronic heart disease, violence, infant mortality, high-blood pressure, diabetes, etc.). This will require additional research. · Description of health disparity that exist among a specific population/community in the U.S. Describe in detail the factors that contribute to the selected health disparity. Why it is especially prevalent among your identified community/population? Factors Impacting the Disparity organized around the Social-Ecological Model. Laws impact on health: From the identified laws described in part 1: describe how these laws have impacted the HEALTH of the community today (2021). Give at least 3 detailed examples Intervention: What can be done to maintain and/or improve the health and well-being of the members of your culture? Identify and discuss at least one action at the individual level (intrapersonal), the community/organizational level, and at the policy level. Evaluation Plan: Detailed description of evaluation plan. How do you know if intervention worked? What evaluation tools will you use to determine the efficacy of your program/intervention.
