This assignment asks you to write a 3-5 page essay that tells a story of how you first became interested in your
profession. The story told in the essay should center on one event in your past; it could be about an experience
on the job, an experience with family or friends, or an experience at school, etc. It’s up to you! However, the
essay should not go over several events or sequences of events through your life (for example, the paper
should not outline your entire journey throughout high school up to this point); instead, the essay should detail
one experience that led to your career choice. It may take some reflection to think about an experience in your
life that may have sparked your interest in your current career goal. If you do not have any career goals at the
moment, consider an experience that led you to choose your declared major or an experience that inspired you
to attend college. Your paper might also focus on a career that you’ve left behind and/or a career that you
might be interested in.
The essay should include the following considerations:
? A thoughtful title that reflects the content of the essay (do not title your essay Writing
Diagnostic or Paper 1).
? A clear introduction that explains how the experience led to your career goals.
? Details about the experience—consider the sights, sounds, smells, and other details about
the event that could be used in the essay to bring the story to life for the reader.
? An understanding of the audience’s needs; consider what readers will need to help them
understand the essay’s story and its significance to your career.
? A concluding paragraph that includes some discussion about your concerns about the
field/career and your role in it (please note: the conclusion should not include the phrase “in
conclusion” because that’s a writing pet peeve).
? Multiple paragraphs over 3-5 pages—the essay should be organized thoughtfully and
effectively for clarity.
? Correct formatting according to the class’s formatting guidelines.
? Try to use as much detail as possible and make your writing as vivid as possible. Please be sure to
proofread your draft before submitting it.
? The paper should be edited for grammar and writing pet peeves.

I became interested in my profession (starting my own business) because of my grandfather. he started his
business in his parents garage and is now a self made millionaire. his hard work and determination made me
want to start my own business and hope to someday be like him.
