Students will have the opportunity to identify the potential for positive change in their institution or community and further develop their professional nursing role competencies in the areas of advocacy and leadership by reflecting on essential components of the change process. Formal use of surveys or other formal data collection methods is not allowed. Students are also required to incorporate ALL professional role competencies demonstrating what they have learned during the course. The professional nursing role areas regarding communication will be demonstrated by sharing the professionalism paper with the class. Guidelines & Grading Criteria: Title o Identify a problem or need in your institution or community. This is an introductory paragraph for the entire paper. It separates the title from the first level 1 heading so they are not back to back. (10 points) Purpose o Discuss the purpose and desired outcomes of the proposed change. Include a specific paragraph with a sentence that begins, “The purpose of this professionalism paper is to …..” Purpose will be the first level 1 heading bold and centered. This is a good habit to develop for writing any scholarly paper. Further, describe the change that is needed in detail (program, policy, law, etc. (15 points) Areas of Professionalism o Discuss how all 14 areas of professional nursing (weekly class topics) were addressed in this proposed change. Include autonomy, philosophy, legal accountability, ethical accountability, partnering, written communication, technology, teaching/learning, critical thinking, advocacy, leadership, theory (specify how your topic relates to a specific nursing theorist), research, and evidence-basedpractice. It is acceptable to have multiple paragraphs under any level one heading and to discuss more than one area of professionalism per paragraph. (20 points) Action Plan o Detail the action plan in detail for the accomplishment of the change. Be very specific as you describe how you would apply your idea for a change to your work or community setting. (15 points) Persons Involved o Identify all persons (groups, agencies, etc.) involved in the change and discuss their specific role in implementation. (5 points) Cost o Estimate the cost of the change (human and financial) and compare it to benefits and cost savings. Describe funding resources. (5 points) Evaluation o Describe the evaluation of the effectiveness of the change. How will you know whether or not the purpose has been achieved and the change successful? (10 points) References o Create a title page using the APA Slide Show and Sample Title Page under Start Here as an example. Be certain all required settings have been made in Microsoft Word and locked in as default. The title of the paper should be related to the topic of your specific paper. Do not use the title of an article as the title of the paper. Utilize the syllabus grading criteria as level one headings. o The body of the paper must be five to seven pages in length. Follow APA guidelines for manuscript preparation. Do not use a bulleted or numbered list. There must be a minimum of one direct quote and two paraphrases in the body of the paper. One paraphrase must cite multiple works in the same parenthesis (APA p. 263). There must be a concluding paragraph rather than just an ending, but do not include Conclusion as a level one heading. o Review the APA manual pages 316-317 to formulate the proper citation for your articles based on whether a digital object identifier (doi) is available or not. Dr. Paper and other software for APA formatting are not recommended. Do not use the APA feature in Word as it does not allow faculty to insert comments and tracked changes. Use the Cite feature of the database, but remember to make necessary APA corrections. o The reference list must include at least five peer-reviewed journal references (nursing journals if possible) not more than five years old
