Choose one of the themes listed below and write an essay that discusses the theme in relation to four texts that you think best illustrate the theme. You must select these texts from among the literature that we have read and discussed in the course this semester.   Themes to choose from: ·       Literacy/Language ·       Identity (Self or National) ·       History (Personal or Social) ·       Religion/Faith   ·       Power/ Control ·       Racism/ Discrimination ·       Assimilation ·       Freedom   In writing your essay, keep in mind the following criteria:    ·       First, identify the theme you have selected and explain why it is important in African American literature.    ·       Then, discuss the theme in four different pieces of literature, explaining how the theme is made evident and dealt with in each text. What are the author’s concerns? What is he or she attempting to convey to readers regarding the particular theme? How does he/she do so?
