Now that you have written your summary, you essay will focus on the summary/response to the article. After analyzing the summary, write a response where you agree with one of the author’s points and disagree with two things the author is saying. Use all the readings, videos and discussions we have done to formulate your response. A response is a critique or evaluation of the author’s essay. It examines ideas that you agree or disagree with and identifies the essay’s strengths and weaknesses in reasoning and logic, in quality of supporting examples, and in organization and style. A good response is persuasive; therefore, it should cite facts, data, supporting quotes from credible sources that either refutes or supports the article you’re responding to, depending on your stance. Stay away from the first person. Avoid personal examples for this particular essay. Here are some guidelines to write an effective essay. Consider this your format. The first sentence should be similar to the introductory sentence in your summary. It should contain the title of the article, the author’s full name and the key point. Introduce the essay with a well-developed paragraph that includes your thesis. Then, each body paragraph summarizes one point and responds to it. Each body paragraph should have a clear topic sentence indicating the point from Pollan you are responding to and show if it is a point of agreement or disagreement. You can use one outside source (any reading we have not done), but other sources should be from all the readings and videos we have used. Be very mindful of plagiarism. I have a zero-tolerance policy for it. So the body of your essay should have only one outside source (optional) and two ( or more) sources we have used within Canvas. Prompt: Based on our readings, videos, and discussions, write a response essay in which you show one point of agreement and two points of disagreement with Michael Pollan’s article. I don’t want you to agree to everything. You will do one point of agreement and two points of disagreement. Support every point very clearly. If you are using the videos for support, paraphrase and cite correctly. Check for grammar and format errors. Follow the structure below. Here is a simple outline: Intro/thesis Summary point one; agree (support & explain) Summary point two; disagree (support & explain) Summary point three; disagree (support & explain) Conclusion Do not forget to format appropriately. Check for grammar and spelling. Since this is an out-of-class writing assignment, get help by using NetTutor or getting tutoring in the ELC. Remember to have 8-12 sentences per paragraph.
