write a paper of roughly 5-6 double-spaced pages analyzing a passage of your choice from White Noise. Details: Pick some 1-to-2-page passage from the book, offer a “close reading” of that particular portion of the text, and then make an argument for its broader relevance to both DeLillo’s novel and American culture writ large. Discuss, but also try to get beyond, matters of plot and storyline. Think about the specific language used in this passage—and what DeLillo is trying to do with it. How does he play with language or try to surprise his reader? What larger questions pertaining to American life, culture, technology, or nature is he exploring here? Please note that I am very interested in your own, personal reflections on White Noise in the context of this class to date. I strongly advise against consulting sources outside this class, especially when it comes to choosing the passage to which to respond. There is a real danger of allowing someone else’s “approach” to overwhelm the approaches learned in this class and/or your own imagination. Also, when half the class mysteriously picks the exact same passage, I have ways of figuring out why that happened, and it doesn’t usually end well. There is no need to include a copy of the passage you are writing about within your paper. Just make sure that you cite page number for direct quotes so your reader (aka me!) can find the passage in his own copy of the book.
