Paper details;

1) Construct a frequency distribution and a histogram for the variables, “Age” and “Number of Miles to Class 1-Way”.

Directions for Excel:

Select the Data tab at the top of the page.

Select Data Analysis (on the right).

Note: You will probably have to add-in the Data Analysis feature the first time. Here’s how:

Click on the File Tab in the upper left of your screen. Now click on “Options” at the bottom. Next click on “Addins” (to the left). Highlight “Analysis ToolPak” in the central part of the screen and select “Go..” A dialogue box will appear. Check the box beside “Analysis ToolPak” and click OK. Go to the Data tab and you should now find the Data Analysis feature. From now on, the Data Analysis feature will be available on your computer.

Click on the Data Analysis feature (under Data tab). A series of options will appear in a pull-down menu. We will be using these all semester. Select Histogram. Under Input Range put the location of the “Age” data (perhaps something like B6:B39) if your data are in these cells in column B or just click and drag over them (my

preferred method). At the bottom left of the histogram dialog box, check the box for New Worksheet Ply.

This will place your output on a new worksheet. Also, check the bottom box, Chart Output. The histogram

graph will usually be displayed to the right of the bin and frequency. You can stretch the graph so that it is larger and easier to see by clicking on the boundary and pulling it down or out. Print out the bin and frequency values along with the histogram chart.

Comment on the general shape of the graph. Is there any general shape? Is it like a normal curve (bellshaped)?

Or is it skewed in some way? Do the same analysis on the “Number of Miles to Class 1-Way”.

2.) Compute Descriptive Statistics for each variable of this class data for which this makes sense: age, miles, minutes, total credit hours being taken, number of hours worked per week, number of meals eaten out per week, and number of books read per year outside of class books.

Directions:

Select the Data tab at the top of the page. Select Data Analysis (on the right). From the menu, select

Descriptive Statistics.

In the Descriptive Statistics dialog box place the location of the column of data to be analyzed in Input Range.

Be sure to check Summary Statistics at the bottom left of the box. Now click OK. Notice the data output. This is pretty nifty output. Be sure to expand the columns width-wise to allow complete viewing of the output. This is

done by going to the top of the column by the A, B, C, etc. and clicking and dragging from the little vertical line over to the right. Do this for each of the first seven variables (age, miles, etc.) of data. Print out the descriptive

statistics for each set of data. It’s not a bad idea to attempt to place all of the output for this question on one page (saves paper). If you have a column title, check Labels in First Row. Otherwise, if you don’t check this, it will tell you that you have non-numeric data. On the other hand, if you check Labels in First Row, but you only have numbers, Excel will take your first number and make it the title and your answers will be all off.

3) Determine the percentage of people in the class who: 1.) are male vs. female, 2.) would have planned to go out-of-state this Fall, 3.) prefer each of the four types of restaurants, and 4.) drink soft drinks. Do this using in Excel by creating a Pie chart for each and have Excel enter the label and percentage. You should have a total of 4 pie charts.

Directions: First, you must summarize the data as shown below for men and women (not 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1,2 e.t.c)

Click and drag over the summarized data. Go to the Insert tab (top of page). Click on Pie. Select the type of pie chart that you want. The pie chart will appear. Now right click on the pie chart and select “Add data labels”.

After that, you can right click on it again and now select “Format Data Labels”. Pick the features that you want in your data labels. Personally, I like to use at least Category Name and Percentage.

4) “Describe your class” report;

Using the descriptive statistics produced in 2) above, describe your class in words and statistics. Do not include histograms or pie charts in your “report”. Use words and statistics. Write at least 2 pages doubled spaced. Include observations gleaned from the information produced using Excel. Discuss each of the 11 variables (age, miles, etc.) used in the database. What can you generalize about the class (eg. Most of the class stays in-state for the summer)?

Support your discussion with a lot of statistics. This written analysis will be graded by clarity, breadth, completeness, and interpretation. This three-page analysis with be worth 40 points of the total grade of computer assignment 1.
