Sports as Social and Global Phenomena Assessment Two: Athlete Case Study Format: Written Coursework Task: For this assessment you must research and write a case study on the global inequalities (from the list provided) faced by an athlete of your choice, using appropriate sport sociology resources (e.g. those on the reading list). This assignment should be underpinned with a sociological approach to aid understanding and significance. The case study is an opportunity for you to successfully write about real life situations and focus on the global inequalities athletes face within the realms of their chosen sport and society (this can be either a past or current athlete). Your written case study should focus primarily on ONE of the sources of inequality covered in lectures and workshops up to and including UH Week 32, which are identified in the following list: Gender and Sexuality Age Race and Ethnicity Disability You may additionally discuss and give consideration to other topics, and sociological concepts such as stereotyping, discrimination, prejudice, socialisation, identity, representation, cultural diversity, social mobility, class relations, commercialisation, narratives in the media, globalisation, power and authority as they relate to the main topic area you have selected for your case study. Sociological understanding recognises the relationship between sport and society, and that all aspects of social existence may interrelate and so it is appropriate to identify and relate links between various topics. In order to pass this assignment your work must meet the assessed learning outcomes (listed below), and must also include: A title page. A contents page. References throughout the case study, cited appropriately (according to APA 6th guidelines), using a minimum of 8 relevant academic books or journals as sources.
